June Russell Stewart, 88, of Broad Creek, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, January 7, 2018 at the Thomasville Medical Center.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City, officiated by Rev. George Arant. Interment will follow at Bethlehem United Methodist Cemetery in Bogue, (just off of Highway 24).

When her husband, Doug, retired from Parkwood Service Center in Wilson, he and June opened Wilson’s first bed & breakfast, Pilgrim’s Rest, which they later sold when they retired to Broad Creek in 1990.

June was active in the White Oak Church of God in Bogue, where she grew up. Before moving to Wilson in the early 1960s when Doug left Cherry Point to open his own service station in Wilson, June operated her own beauty shop at Broad Creek. She loved the Lord and was often found teaching her grandchildren Bible verses and taking them on adventurous trips.

A loving wife, mother and grandmother, June always displayed a quick smile and a great sense of humor. She doted on her grandchildren and great grandchildren often entertaining them by driving her car through mud puddles to their squeals of delight. Often the grandchildren would cry to stay when their parents came to retrieve them.

June, who said her middle name was “Go,” enjoyed traveling and was always ready to take a trip anywhere.

She is survived by her daughter, Paula Stewart Lynam and husband, Steve, of Thomasville; a son, Rick Stewart and wife, Karen, of Kenly; a granddaughter, Annelise Lynam Cheng and husband, Jack, of Greenville, S.C.; three grandsons, Brian Stewart and wife, Jeanne, of Conway, S.C.; Mark Stewart and wife, Brandy, of Ayden, and Chad Lynam and wife, Rachel, of Greensboro;  six great grandchildren, Sarah Grace Stewart and Abigail Rose Stewart, both of Ayden, Brighton Stewart and Owen Stewart of Consay, S.C., William Lynam of Greensboro, and Beauden Cheng of Greenville, S.C.

June was preceded in death by her husband Doug Stewart in 1996.
