Julian was born in the community of Ocean on July 21, 1916, the second of five sons to Alexander and Mary Etta Sanders Weeks. He graduated from Swansboro High School in 1935 and then joined the Army in April 1942. Julian served his county in the Pacific Theater, stationed in New Guinea. Though he did not experience direct combat, Julian did receive the American Theater Campaign Medal; Good Conduct 600-68; Victory Medal Philippines: Liberation Medal with one Bronze Service Star and Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Medal with three Bronze Service Stars. At the end of World War II, Julian returned to the family farm where he worked until he was employed in a menhaden factory in Morehead City. In 1970, Julian and several business partners, opened their own menhaden plant, Sea and Sound Processing Co., in Beaufort. Julian worked there until his retirement in 1982.
In 1943, as a young soldier training in Louisville, Kentucky, Julian met a young woman, Thelma Leigh, from Pleasant View, KY. Their storyline was broken when he left for service overseas, but their relationship rekindled in 1981, when he learned that Thelma was widowed. The two were married in 1983 and remained happily wed until Thelma’s death in 2007.
Much of Julian’s 100 years was spent along the shores of Bogue Sound, where he had a great love for the beauty and serenity, as well as enjoying the fishing and crabbing and clamming. He also found great pleasure in gardening and bee keeping. Julian had a wealth of local historic knowledge, as well as an unrivaled sense of all things related to local fishing and gardening.
Julian is survived by many family members and close friends and care givers, who will miss him dearly. He was witty and charming to all, and had a deep and generous love for his family and those he loved as family.
Julian was preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Mary Etta Weeks; five brothers, John Weeks, Elbert Weeks, Leon Weeks, Harold Weeks, and Lloyd Sanders, and his beloved wife, Thelma.
