Joyce Wilson Lewis
February 26, 1926 - April 14, 2011

Joyce Wilson Lewis, 85, of Morehead City died peacefully on April 14, .2011, at Harborview Health Center.  Born February 26, 1926 in London, England, she was the daughter of George & Leah Wilson and middle sister of brother Bill and sister Joan, all of whom preceded her in death.  Surviving the Blitz of London by Hitler during World War II, she became a ‘war bride’ on January 11, 1947 marrying Virgil Thomas Lewis and then coming to America a year later to his home in Marshallberg, NC.  It was certainly culture shock for a proper English woman from London and culture shock as well for all of Marshallberg.

Joyce worked as secretary and hosted her own show on WMBL, the local radio station on Radio Island and the family moved to Morehead City in 1959.  She soon began work at the UNC Institute of Marine Sciences where she became the Executive Administrator until her retirement.  Joyce was active in the Carteret Community Theater playing roles in many productions including starring as Emeline Pickett in Bonnie Blue Sweetheart.  Always an advocate for the less fortunate, she served as a child advocate for many years as a ‘Guardian Ad Litem’ working to give a voice to children in the judicial system and worked for many years as a volunteer for Martha’s Mission Cupboard and was also an active member of All Saints Anglican Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil, in 1997.  She is survived by her son Glenn and wife Lana of Morehead City and grandsons, Shawn & Chris; by her son Michael of Chapel Hill and grandson Alex & wife Shanda & great-grandson Finley and granddaughter Courtney; by her daughter Susan and husband Keith of Tampa, FL and grandsons Dylan, Ryan, and Kevin; and her son Steve and wife Hope of Morehead City and granddaughter Kayla and grandson Charles.  Joyce is also survived by her much loved nieces and nephews in her beloved England, Pat, Anita, Andrew, and Martin and their families as well as her numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins in Carteret County.

The family will receive visitors on Sunday April 17th from 4-6 PM at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City.  Funeral services will be on Monday April 18th at 11 AM at All Saints Anglican Church.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to either the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org or to Martha’s Mission Cupboard of Morehead City, PO Box 603, Morehead City, NC 28557.
