Joseph “Joe” Lee Lyerly, Jr., 86, of Smyrna, passed away Sunday, December 6, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family.

Joseph honorably served in the U.S. Army. Joe then spent 30 years with civil service and finally retired as Director of Public Works at Cherry Point. A highlight of his career was setting the sun dial in the center of the Pentagon as well as building the main entrance and runway of Cherry Point U.S. Marine Corps Air Station. He loved to work with his hands and enjoyed building additions to his home and property. He was a lifetime faithful believer that dedicated his time as a deacon of the church and adult Sunday School Teacher. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Thursday, December 10, 2015 at Munden Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Michael Fields officiating. Interment will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lou Ann Mason Lyerly of the home; daughter, Joanne “Jo” Lyerly of Otway; two sons, Leslie “Les” Paul Lyerly and wife Pamela of Sanford, and Edward “Eddie” Lyerly of Otway: brother, Tom Lyerly; five grandchildren, Andrew Lyerly, Allison Lyerly Pridgen, Kristen Harvey, Kaylyn Nilsen, and Dylan Lyerly; and two great-grandchildren, Liam Harvey, and Cole Lyerly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph L. Lyerly, Sr. and Margaret Galvin Lyerly.

The family will receive friends 1:00 – 2:00 pm prior to the service at Munden Funeral Home.
