Dr. Joseph Major Ward, MD, 89, of Cape Carteret, passed away Monday, May 26, 2014. He was born in Greenville, NC on July 21, 1924 to the late Dr. and Mrs. V. A. Ward and spent his childhood in Robersonville. He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Patricia Blalock Ward; a son, Stuart K. Ward; three brothers; Vernon, Stuart, and Walter; and a sister, Frances.
Joe was a graduate of UNC-CH and Duke University where he received his medical degree as a family physician. He practiced medicine for nearly 50 years in Robersonville, Greenville, and Ayden. Joe was an officer in the US Navy. He served during the Korean Conflict for which he received several medals for honor and bravery. Joe enjoyed golfing, spending time on the water, and watching his beloved UNC Tarheels. He spent his latter years in Cape Carteret where he continued to enjoy his hobbies ans spending time with his family and friends. Joe was a devoted husband, father, and physician. He will be dearly missed by all.
Joe is survived by his son Joseph (Joey) B. Ward of Morehead City; daughter, Weenonah (Nonie) W. Kinlaw and son-in-law, John C. Kinlaw of Beaufort; daughter-in-law, Michele D. Ward of Morehead City; granddaughter, Mary-Stuart Ward of Morehead City; and several nieces and nephews.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
