Joseph Simon

Joseph Stephen Simon, Sr., 92, of Newport, North Carolina, passed away on September 29, 2013 at Crystal Bluffs Rehabilitation and Health Care Center after a long illness.

He was born October 2, 1920, in Rome, New York, the son of Stanley and Theodora Simon. He was the seventh of eight children, and worked on the family farm during the depression years. He married his wife, Amelia (Emily), in 1948 and together they raised three children. He was self-employed until he retired in 1983 and moved to North Carolina. He was a member of Transfiguration Catholic Church in Rome and St. Egbert Catholic Church in Morehead City.

He thought often of his military service in the Pacific during World War II, where he served as a field lineman and radio switchboard operator in the US Army, 77th Division, 306th Infantry. He was awarded the Bronze Star for service during the Pacific battles for Guam, Leyte, Kerama Retto, le Shima and Okinawa. He was among the troops on the beach at Leyte to witness General MacArthur's famous return to the Philippines in 1944. He served during the occupation of Japan at the end of the war.

He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Simon-Waters and husband, James, of Morehead City, NC, and his son, Robert M. Simon of Sparta, TN, three grandsons, Richard Waters MD of Seattle, WA, Charles Waters of Seattle, WA, and James Waters of Durham, NC and several nieces.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his son, Joseph S. Simon, Jr., parents, Stanley and Theodora Simon, three sisters and four brothers.

Funeral services will be held in Rome, New York.
