John R. "Jack" Smith, Jr.

John R. “Jack” Smith Jr., 35, of Newport, passed away Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at Carteret Health Care.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, May 7, 2016 at Saint James United Methodist Church with Pastor Tom Supplee, Rev. Jack Mumford and Rev. Thomas Davis officiating.  Interment to follow at Carteret Memorial Gardens.

Jack, an avid Carolina fan, was a 1999 graduate of East Carteret High School.  He was bilingual in both English and Spanish and had a strong interest in Latin.  A former volunteer of the Broad Street Clinic, he enjoyed spending time helping other people.  In his youth he was an active Boy Scout who obtained the Rank of Life and was tapped for Order of the Arrow in Troop 252.  He was a ham radio operator (his call letters were KE4YHR) as well as a longtime WTKF/WJNC radio producer.

He is survived by his father, John R. Smith Sr., and wife Carol Smith of Otway; mother, Melissa Smith of Goldsboro; sister, Katie Smith and fiancé Nick Tatman of Morehead City; maternal grandmother, Emily G. Amburn; grandfather, L.F. “Bud” Amburn Jr. and wife Allean; uncles, Benjamin and his wife Gail Smith, Paul G. Amburn and wife Kasey; aunts, Maru Chapman and Greer Cawood and husband Scott; cousin, Mickey and a number of maternal cousins.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, R.C. Smith Jr. and paternal grandmother, Jean Farmer Smith.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 pm Friday, May 6, 2016 at Saint James United Methodist Church in Newport, NC.
