John Gordon Whitehead

August 26, 1918 — March 27, 2013

John Gordon Whitehead, 94, of Morehead City, passed away Wednesday March 27, 2013 at home surrounded by family.

A funeral service will be held 3:00 pm Saturday at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Mike Frese officiating. Interment will follow at Bayview Cemetery.

John Gordon Whitehead was born on August 26, 1918 in Bachleor, NC to Carl Thomas and Charlotte Mason Whitehead. Gordon was one of eight children raised in Crab Point. He married Addie Mayo Forbes, June 1940. He was in the US Coast Guard during WWII stationed in Hatteras, NC. He was a commercial fisherman for 50 years, and became a Captain with the Empire Menhadden Company.

He was a member of  First United Methodist Church, Morehead City. He was a mason for over 40 years at Ocean Lodge #405, Shriner and a member of BPOE Elks Lodge in Morehead City.

He is survived by his son John G. Whitehead, Jr., and wife Doranne of St. Cloud, FL. His grandchildren, Michelle Quillen Warren and husband, Rob of Raleigh, NC, Gordon Kyle Quillen and wife Linda of McDonough, GA, Angie Quillen Davis and husband, Kirk of Morehead City, and Carla Whitehead Moore of Kissimmee, FL. He is also survived by his great grandchildren, Tyler Quillen, Victoria Quillen, and Abagail Moore. He is also survived by his son-in-law, Dave Whereatt.

He is also survived by his brother Celus Whitehead and wife Marge, and a sister Charlotte Whitehead Mirabella and husband Blackie. Also many nieces and nephews.

He is also survived by his good friend for the last 19 years, Mary Laughton.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Addie "Bill" Whitehead  and daughter, Phyllis Whitehead Whereatt. His parents and his brothers, Carl Whitehead, and Charles Whitehead. Also his sisters, Margaret Whitehead Bowen, Bessie Whitehead Whitehurst, and Lois Whitehead Willis.

Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 pm Friday at Munden Funeral Home.
