John "Brother" Weston Smith Jr., 87, of Morehead City, North Carolina, passed away on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, at his home.

A memorial service to honor John's life will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, December 4th at Munden Funeral Home, officiated by Pastor Wesley Holmes.

Born on November 23, 1936, in Atlantic, North Carolina, John was the son of the late John Weston Smith and Marjorie Smith. Proud of his Down East heritage, he had a great childhood growing up on Core Sound. John loved to fish and hunt and thoroughly enjoyed the great outdoors.

A proud graduate of Virginia Tech, John graduated with his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. His dedication and accomplishments were seen throughout his successful lifelong career as an engineer. With John's talent for inventing and designing, he was quite the handyman and enjoyed tackling every issue with ease and perfection. He was certainly happiest when he was busy building and creating.

John had a wonderful ability to connect with others. A natural people person, he cherished the company of family, friends, and strangers alike. His warm smile and genuine interest in others' lives made him a beloved figure in the community, always ready to engage in conversations and offer a helping hand when needed. John loved his family and especially enjoyed fishing with his sons and grandkids.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his wife, Nellie Ann Smith; sons, Mark Smith and wife Laurie of Davis, NC and David Smith and wife Susan of Smithfield, VA; sister, Linda Tosto of Madison, NC; sister-in-law, Michelle Smith; grandchildren, Zachary (Hannah), Ashley (Hunter), Joshua, Rebecca, Abigail and Ryan; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brothers, Richard Smith and Jeffrey Smith; and brother-in-law, Paul Tosto.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center, 1785 Island Rd, Harkers Island, NC 28531.
