John R. Russell, 69, of Newport, passed away on August 23, 2024, at his home.
A Celebration of Life service will at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 31st at the family home, 1074 Sea Gate Drive, Newport N.C.
John was born and raised for three years on the Grand Concourse, Bronx, New York. The parents relocated to Rockland County, New York where they built their home and resided till their passing. It must be mentioned that John made lifelong friends there who were his anchors. He had multiple college degrees with a bachelor’s in engineering. John was awarded for building a time capsule for the town of Clarkstown. He built a local favorite, “Tin Man” for Lederle Laboratories. John was a master and award-winning Tin Smith both in Rockland and here in North Carolina. He also had his license for HVAC and owned his own business for 10 years.
John met his wife Kathy 45 years ago this month on a matchup blind date. They were married for 39 years in September. Both of them lived in Warwick, New York and relocated here 26 years ago and built most of their home on the Crystal Coast’s ICW.
He was the proud father of Brian Christopher Russell, who is married to Erica McCarthy and they reside in Greenville, North Carolina. They are parents to grandchildren, Vince, Gwynn, and Norah who they lovingly refer to as Papa John. Equally proud daughter, Laura Nicole Russell who resides in Newport with her partner, Olin M. Thomas.
John was an employee for nineteen years as a master aircraft mechanic and sheet metal specialist for Harriers, and multiple aircraft. He mentored and apprenticed sheet metal workers at Cherry Point Air Station and was proud of his skills and enjoyed his time with his family and building projects.
His late parents were C. John Russell Jr. and Antoinette Caputo. He is survived by his sister, Dolores A. Zelazo; childhood friend and brother-in-law, Alan of Morris Plains, New Jersey, and brother, Roy A. Russell and his wife Beverly in Sinton, Texas; and also, many beloved nieces and nephews.
