John "Johnny" Barbee III

John “Johnny” Barbee III, 72, of Swansboro, North Carolina, passed away on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at ECU Health Medical Center.

Johnny was born on January 22, 1951, to the late John and Chalmers Barbee. Born and raised in Rocky Mount, NC, Johnny grew up embracing the values of hard work, resilience, and dedication that would shape his character and define his professional career. Johnny's passion for his work as a Railroad Engineer spanned over 30 years. His dedication and expertise were valued by all who worked alongside him in Rocky Mount. 

In 2013, Johnny and his beloved wife of 53 years, Wendy, decided to move to Carteret County, NC. They were drawn to the area's tranquility and the picturesque beauty of the Crystal Coast, which Johnny held a particular fondness for, often spending his days at the beach.

Johnny was a man of many talents, and his inclination for fixing things and lending a helping hand to friends and neighbors was well-known. Johnny had a gift for connecting with people and loved engaging in conversations, and making friends wherever he went. Johnny will be remembered as a loving husband and a dedicated father to his children.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Wendy Barbee; daughter, Nicole Knight (Bo) of Nashville, NC; sons, John Barbee IV and Michael Barbee (Lindsey), all of Raliegh, NC; sister, Deborah Hayes (Allen) of Greenville; grandchildren, Nick Hillard, Sara Knight, Thomas Knight, and Nora Barbee; and his faithful dog, Nauti.

The family will celebrate Johnny’s life privately.
