John Albert Angell, Sr.

John Albert Angell, Sr., 88, of Morehead City, passed away Saturday, June 22, 2019 at Crystal Bluffs Rehabilitation & Health Care Center.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, June 28, 2019 at Riverview Cemetery in Charlottesville, VA with Pastor Tim Marriner officiating.

John was born in Hinton, West Virginia to William C. Angell and Myrtle Laura Williams. They moved to Charlottesville, VA when he was 13. His dad was an engineer with C & O Railroad. John graduated from Lane High School in Charlottesville, VA and shortly after entered the US Marine Corps. While stationed at Quantico, VA. John came home on weekend leave and met a lovely lady, Catherine Hicks, at a dance at Acme Visible Records in Crozet, VA. After a brief courtship they married in Charlottesville, VA on June 29, 1952. They had two children together. John shipped out to the Korean War in the Fall of 1952. During his time at war, his wife gave birth in 1953 to their first child, a daughter. In 1955 at Cherry Point, NC, she gave birth to their son. John was baptized in New Bern, NC arm in arm with Catherine while she was pregnant with their son.

John served in the Marine Corps for 30 years, retiring as a Master Gunnery Sergeant, serving in the Korean War and Vietnam.

After retiring from the Marine Corps, he worked for Civil Service as an Environmental Engineer. While working, John went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree in Asian Studies from the University of Maryland University College and a Master’s Degree in Education from Troy University. He was fluent in four languages.

John taught English while living in Okinawa, Japan and Chiang Mai, Thailand. He enjoyed traveling all over the world and came back to North Carolina in 2015.

John loved to sing, play guitar and dance. He is now singing with the angels in Heaven.

John is survived by his daughter, Vicki Angell-Capps and husband Daniel R. Capps of Morehead City; son, John Albert Angell, Jr. and wife Katherine Angell of Cocoa, FL. He has two grand dogs, Chloe and Mason.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Myrtle Laura Angell; sisters, Elizabeth Peters and Juanita Thornton; and brothers, Clarence “Bud” Angell, Frank Angell, and Curtis Angell.

Flowers are welcome, and can be sent to Munden Funeral Home or Riverview Cemetery. Donations can be made to Glad Tidings Church Music Department, 4621 Country Club Rd, Morehead City, NC.
