Joel "Jake" Muse Carraway, 88, of South River, passed away quietly Thursday August 16, 2012 at his home.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Sunday at Munden Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Glenn Everette officiating. Interment will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park.
Joel was born April 28, 1924 at Merrimon, NC to Henry Muse Carraway and Vera Minnie Nelson Carraway. He was a graduate of Beaufort High School. Joel entered the US Navy in June of 1944 and served with the Navy Armed Guard on Atlantic convoy duty throughout WWII. He married Dollie Gray Cannon on September 16, 1947. He was a member of Merrimon Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife: sisters Margaret Becton, Agnes Flythe, and Minnie Pittman, of Merrimon, and Mary Pittman of Beaufort: sons Richard Carraway and wife Betty of Morehead City, and Michael Carraway and wife Lynn of Beaufort: granddaughters Cristie Penland of Morehead City, Christy Burney of Fayetteville, Michelle Carraway Butler and husband Billy of Morganton, and Virginia Carraway-Stage and husband Morgan of Greenville: great grandsons Matthew Dillingham, Ronald Willis, and Cristian Penland of Morehead City, Matthew and Noah Burney of Fayetteville, and Robert Matthew Butler of Morganton: and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Thelma Robinson, brothers Herman Carraway, Henry Carraway, Luther Carraway, Grady Carraway, and Allen Carraway.
Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 pm Saturday at Munden Funeral Home.
