Joan Gaskill Gillikin

August 22, 1938 — October 3, 2021

Harkers Island

Mrs. Joan “Jo” Gaskill Gillikin, 83, of Harkers Island, passed away on Sunday, October 3, 2021, at Carteret Health Care.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, October 9th, at Vergie Mae Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Richard Patterson.

Joan, or Jo as she was more affectionately known, was born on August 22, 1938, at the Beaufort Hospital in Beaufort, North Carolina to the late William and Nellie Gaskill.

Gardening was a favorite pastime for Jo who loved to work the earth and enjoy the harvest of her labor. Her kitchen was certainly her happy place. Growing up on the coast, she mastered seafood and was known by her family as the best seafood cook on the Island. Cooking for friends and family was always a delight, the larger the crowd the better it was, and cooking Sunday meals were always something she looked forward to.

As a dedicated Christian woman, she faithfully attended Free Will Baptist Church in Beaufort. Her love for the Lord was evident to those around her. Walking in God’s grace and guidance, she was always a friendly face, a serious tither, and a loving person.

Jo loved fashion and was known for her “put together attire”. Her outfits described her personality of an outgoing friendly woman. In her downtime, she could be found relaxing and enjoying a good cookbook or a Better Homes and Garden Magazine.

She was an outstanding wife, loving aunt, and great friend to her sister-in-law.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Patsy Gaskill of Harkers Island; nieces and nephews, Anmarie Gaskill, Stephanie Sanders and husband Greg, all of Harkers Island, Phillip Carawan, Janeen Russell, Angela Varner and husband Danny, and Evonne Carawan, all of Morehead City, and Terry Gaskill of Newport; along with numerous great nieces and great nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Billie Gillikin on December 2, 2012; sister, Eva Carawan; brothers, William Howard W. Gaskill and Stephen Gaskill; and nephew, David “Buddy” Gaskill.

As an expression of sympathy, flowers are welcome, or donations may be made to the Free Will Baptist Church, P.O. Box 2069, Beaufort NC 28516.
