J.J. Herbert Jr., 76, of Aurora and formerly of Morehead City, died peacefully on Thursday, February 3, 2022, at Pruitt Health - Neuse, in New Bern.
Joseph was born in Wilson, North Carolina, on July 21, 1945, to the late Joseph J. Herbert and Mary Clark Herbert. He grew up in Grifton, North Carolina and following high school, he joined the United States Navy where he honorably served 3 years. During his time in the military, he was a boilerman on the U.S.S. Myles C. Fox Destroyer where he was responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of the ship's heat and hot water systems, focusing on the large boilers in the fire rooms.
After the Navy, J.J. became a pipe fitter and welder, working diligently in that field for numerous years. It was his love for the open waters that later led him to captain the charter boat, Crying Shame III of Atlantic Beach where he enjoyed saltwater life again. J.J. was a great outdoorsman who loved the sport of bear hunting, deer hunting and of course, being on the water fishing.
He is survived by his son, Joseph “Joe” J. Herbert III and wife Ashley of Morehead City; brother, Harry C. Herbert and wife Brenda of Modesta, CA; grandchildren, Amy Herbert Hanson and husband Jesse of Fayetteville, Grace Herbert and husband Christian of Newport, and Riley Herbert of Newport; great grandchildren, Marley, Lilly, Maisey, and Patty; and beloved dog Stella.
