Vincent ?Jimmy? La Shan, 85, of Newport, died January 18th, 2010.
Jimmy joined the U.S. Marine Corps soon after Pearl Harbor at the age of 17. He was
attached to VMSB-343 and served in the South Pacific.
He met the love of his life, Cherry Garner, at the USO in Morehead City. They were
married June 3, 1944 and made their home in Newport after the war. In 1954 they
moved to Miami, FL, where Jimmy was employed by Eastern Air Lines as an Industrial
Engineer and inducted into the American Institute of Industrial Engineers. He retired
from Eastern Air Lines in 1983 and moved back to Newport with his bride.
Jimmy served two terms on the Newport Board of Commissioners and two terms on
the Carteret County Board of Commissioners.
He was a devoted husband, a loving father and active over many years in serving his
church and community. He was a member of St. Egbert?s Catholic Church, the Knights
of Columbus, the Newport Pig Cooking, VFW and the DAV.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, Jan 23rd at St. Egbert?s
Catholic Church with interment following at Amariah Garner Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Cherry Garner La Shan, two daughters, Marisa
Castellon and husband Dr. Celestino Castellon of Miami Lakes, FL and Donna Crane and
husband Arthur Crane of Newport; three grandchildren, Nicole Crane-Squires and
husband Mike Squires of Newport, Jamie Crane of Newport, Rodrigo Castellon of Miami
Lakes, FL and one great grandson, Michael Squires of Newport.
The family will receive friends following Mass and interment at the home.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer?s
Association, www.alz.org or the Wounded Warriors Project, www.wounded
warriorsproject.org.
Jimmy had much love to give and was generous to friends and strangers. In turn, he
was loved by many and will be missed by all.
