Jeffrey Stephen Cohen(Tattoo Jeff, Jeff the Jew), of Havelock, NC passed away surrounded by family at Vidant Medical Center on October 19, 2018.
A celebration of life is scheduled for his birthday, Tuesday, November 6, 2018, at 400 Fontana Blvd. in Havelock from 6pm to 11pm. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Jeff’s life. The family asks for no flowers but instead there will be a memory wall present for condolences, photographs and messages to Jeff.
Tattoo Jeff was born on November 6, 1947 in Bronx, NY to Rose and Morris Cohen.
Jeff wore many hats before settling on tattooing and found at a young age that he could make himself the exception to just about any rule. Forever the risk taker, Jeff did 18 days in the Navy, drove an ambulance, smuggled a little cocaine and spent time in the clink. Jeff the Jew traveled across the country and back and lived life on his terms before opening The Custom Tattoo Company in Havelock, NC in 1983.
Jeff lived, worked and owned multiple studios during the golden years of American Tattooing and was considered a living legend by all of his peers, but it was the birth of his daughter, Lauren Cohen in 1992 that Jeff credited as his crowning achievement. She will carry his legacy forward as The Custom Tattoo Co. celebrates its 35th year in Havelock.
After a yearlong bout with leukemia Jeff passed away peacefully from an unrelated accident at home.
He is survived by his daughter, Lauren Tedder; his son, Sean Cohen; his brother, Ira Lee Cohen; and mother, Rose Cohen.
