Jeanette (Lawson) Mayo

February 21, 1933 — March 23, 2014

Jeanette Lawson Mayo of Morehead City, NC peacefully slipped away into the arms of God on Sunday, May 23, 2014.  She was born in Buncombe County, NC to the late John Erastus and Marlee Casada Lawson.

Jeanette received her A.A. Degree at Lees-McRae Junior College, Banner Elk, NC and her certification in Health Record Administration at U.P. Public Service Hospital in Baltimore, MD.  She was employed at University Hospital (formerly the Medical College) in Augusta, GA from 1954-1974 where she served as the Medical Records Director.  She moved to Savannah, GA in 1974 and was employed by St. Joseph’s Hospital as its Director of Medical Records until her retirement.

She held various offices in the Georgia Medical Records Association and served and chaired multiple committees.  She wrote numerous articles for the medical records and administrative professions.  She served on the Curriculum Advisory Committee of Armstrong College in Savannah and on the Clinical Site Faculty at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.  Jeanette demonstrated dedication, achievement and excellence of service in the medical records field during her career.

Jeanette had a deep faith in God. She and her husband; Ben, were long-time members of the Isle of Hope United Methodist Church in Savannah, GA. She had been active in the Chancel and Ladies Choirs.  She served on the Parsonage Committee and helped spearhead the renovations during the time of Reverend Dick Reese’s ministry there.  Upon her retirement, she enjoyed having fun with her bridge club and the Parkersburg Garden Club.  The highlight for her every spring was attending the Masters Golf Tournament. In 2010, she and Ben moved to North Carolina, where they were members of Northwoods United Methodist Church of Jacksonville, NC.  They resided at Liberty Commons Assisted Living until Ben’s death in 2012.  She then moved to the Carolina House - a Brookdale Community in Morehead City, NC to live closer to family.

She is predeceased by her devoted husband and dearest friend of 57 years - Benjamin Franklin Mayo.  Jeanette is survived by sisters; Elaine Lawson Guglielmelli, Joan Lawson Franklin, a brother; John Malone Lawson, a sister-in-law; Lucy Mayo Leister of Swansboro, NC; twelve nieces and nephews, twenty-four great nieces and nephews and seven great-great nieces and nephews.  Her family is forever grateful to “Team Jeanette” who provided loving care and tender support during her declining stages of life.


The family and church of Cape Carteret Presbyterian Church will hold a memorial service on Saturday, March 29th at 11:00 AM - the Reverend Ben Burrows, presiding.  Visitation will be held in the church parlor prior to the service at 10:30 AM.  A future memorial service will be held in Savannah, Georgia at the Isle of Hope United Methodist Church.  Close friend and retired minister, Reverend Dick Reese will  assist in this “Celebration of Life” service.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to an organization very dear to Jeanette - savethechildren.org
