Jay Fairbanks, 62, of Cape Carteret, passed away on Tuesday, June 22, 2021, at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Center in Wilmington, following a sudden and unexpected medical condition.
A gathering of family friends will be held from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 22, 2021, at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City.
Jay was born on April 9, 1959, in Trinidad in the West Indies, to the late Herbert and Elizabeth Fairbanks. He has been a Carteret County resident since 1976 and graduated from West Carteret High School with the Class of 1979. Following high school, he attended East Carolina University. Jay loved his country and proudly served in the United States Navy including a tour in Desert Storm. He fondly spoke of his time in the military and the various locations across the world where he was stationed.
Jay worked more than three decades in the retail industry in Eastern North Carolina, including managing a Rite-Aid store in Wilmington. More recently, Jay began working with Munden Funeral Home where his kind and gentle personality was a blessing to so many.
Being at the beach was certainly Jay’s happy place. He loved beach music and Jimmy Buffett tunes. Grilling out for friends and family was one of his specialties. Jay cherished friendship and put great value on the time he was able to spend with his close-knit group of friends. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and was generous in every way possible.
He is survived by his sister, Lee Spell of Wake Forrest; brothers, Tim Fairbanks of Emerald Isle and Ted Fairbanks and wife Patricia of Williamsburg, VA; numerous nieces and nephews; and close friends that he considered family.
The family would like to especially thank Lynn Balderson who was faithfully by his side during his final days.
