Jasper Bell

October 7, 1918 — February 8, 2011

Jasper Bell, 92, of Morehead City, died Tuesday, February 08, 2011 at his home after two years of illness.

Services will be held 11:00 am Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Morehead City.  Interment will follow at Bayview Cemetery. Arland Bell, Gene Bell, Jon Bell, Brad Bell, Jimmy Parker, and Fletcher Noe will serve as pallbearers.

Mr. Bell was born to Redden and Bessie Arnold Bell on October 7, 1918 in Blounts Creek, North Carolina. He attended Aurora High School, NC State Collage, and Shuford Barber College. He served in the US Marine Corps during WWII. He was a barber in Washington, NC, and owned and operated barber shops in Havelock and Morehead City. He also managed the barber shops on the US Marine Corps Air Station at Cherry Point. After 20 years as a barber, he changed professions and was employed with J.I. Holcomb Manufacturing Company as a sales representative. He became the top sales producer before retiring on his 81st birthday. The company president wrote: “Jasper Bell has achieved a level of salesmanship that reflects his true nature…honest, hard-working, and an achiever”.

He moved to Morehead City in 1947 and fell in love with the area, especially the water. He enjoyed all activities on the water, even learning to water ski on his 40th birthday. He excelled in many areas including carpentry and gardening, but his favorite hobbies were fishing and boating.

During Jasper Bell’s years in Morehead City he served in many capacities. First and foremost, he served as a deacon, Sunday School superintendent, choir member, and other related jobs at First Baptist Church. He served on the Board of Directors for the Chamber of Commerce, and as President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce where he received the Distinguished Service Award. He was a Town Board City Commissioner, Chairman of the Beautification Committee, and a member of the local Toastmasters. He was instrumental in establishing the city park and boat ramps.  More recently, Mr. Bell served as Grand Marshall in the Ceremony of the Opening of the Time Capsule during the Morehead City Sesquicentennial Celebration. He recently commented on changes he had seen and expressed pride in the many improvements in and around the city.

In addition to his wife, Ruby N. Bell, he is survived by two daughters; Vollie B. Sanders and husband, Darrell of Colorado Springs, CO, and Donna B. Lewis and husband, Wiley Lewis of Hampstead, NC; a brother, Mayhue Bell and wife, Eleanor of Grimesland, NC, and a dear sister-in-law Lois Bell of Washington, NC; five grandchildren, Sherrie Sanders Herlein and husband, Jody of Cherokee Village, AK, Dedee Sanders Berry and husband, Scot of Germantown, TN, Kiesa Sanders Powell and husband, Nathan of Arvada, CO, Slade Lewis and wife, Tammy of Greensboro, NC, and Lisa Lewis Shea of Hampstead, NC; nine great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
