Janice (Black) Ewell

March 28, 1939 — January 3, 2014

Janice Black Ewell, 74, died peacefully at her home in Newport, NC on Friday, January 3, 2014.

Memorial services will be held at 2pm Thursday, January 9 at the Newport Moose Lodge on Roberts Road and at 2pm on Saturday, January 11 at Presbyterian Church of the Cross on Phillips Avenue in Greensboro.

Janice was born in 1939 to Casey and Rebecca Black.  She graduated from Greensboro Senior High School in 1957.  An accountant, she worked for Pilot Life Insurance and Lynch Hosiery in Greensboro and for York Construction in Raleigh.  In 1999 she retired from Sheraton Hotels in Atlantic Beach.

She was an active member of the Newport Women of the Moose, Chapter 2060, achieving the level of Red Stole Collegian.  She was a member of Presbyterian Church of the Cross in Greensboro.  Janice was an artist and enjoyed games, gadgets, and puzzles.  She supported wildlife and animal organizations.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Jesse Ewell, stepson Mark Ewell, sister Sylvia Whitworth, special friend Russell Jenkins, and aunt and uncle Hase and Lena Maie Smith.

She is survived by stepdaughters Karen Rawls, Deanie, Susie, and Linda Ewell along with their children.  She is also survived by her brother Tom Black , his wife Bobbie, and brother-in-law Wesley Whitworth along with their children.  Another surviving relative is Brenda Smith Brown of Atlanta.

Janice’s family extends a special thank you to her Newport friends and neighbors and to  fellow Moose Lodge members who were a joy and blessing to her.
