Janet Marie (Covert) Smith

Janet "Jan" Marie Smith, 80, of Newport, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at her home.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 pm Saturday, January 24, 2015 at St. James United Methodist Church with Rev. Tom Supplee officiating. Interment will be 11:00 am Monday at New Bern National Cemetery.

Jan was a member of St. James United Methodist Church. She was the former organist for First Methodist Church in Havelock, Ann Street UMC in Beaufort, and retired with St. James UMC. She was the former manager for Carteret County Area Transportation System (C-CATS), and retired in 1997.

She is survived by a son, Donald "Bud" Smith and wife Ginger of King, NC; daughter Vonne Lankford and husband David of Greenwood, SC; daughter in-law Connie Heath and husband Rick: eight grandchildren, Thomas Lankford and wife Susanne, David Kyle Lankford and fiancee Paloma Cantu, Sean Smith and fiancee Cheryl Hryb, Jason Smith and wife Leone, Christine Guthrie and husband Doug, Bryan Smith, Kaycee Gray and husband Stephen, and Tracy Smith and wife Vanessa; 10 great- grandchildren, Landon and Trenton Lankford, Ryder and True Smith, Parker and Evan Guthrie, Stephen III and Kayson Meadows, Tristin and Jacob Smith: and very special friends Carol Anselmo, Ted and Betty Taylor, and Paul and Linda Bergin.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years Jan Lee Smith, her parents William James and Hazel Finch Covert, a son William Keith Smith, two daughters Belinda Lee Smith, and Edna Lynn Smith, a grandson Walter W. Lankford, and a brother William James Covert, Jr.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
