James "SHORTY" Mullins, Sr.

James “SHORTY” Richard Mullins, Sr., 83, of Newport, passed away on Saturday, March 11, 2017, at the Crystal Coast Hospice House.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, March 15,2017, at Broad Creek United Methodist church with Pastor Ben Ball officiating. Interment will follow the service at Gethsemane memorial park.

He was always known by many as the “Little white-haired man outside the Red &White”, selling tickets for the Town of Newport. He worked at Cherry Point in Civil Service for 21 years and 9 months. He spent twenty years of his life serving his country in the United States Marine Corps which included two tours in Vietnam. He also spent 30 years of his life as a volunteer firefighter with the Newport Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, VFW, and TREA Military Retirees. He also was a Troop 61 Asst. Scoutmaster, he enjoyed spending time outside and doing outdoor activities.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Faye Mullins; daughters, Shirley “Snookie” C. Mullins and significant other James “Pat” Patterson of Fredricksburg, VA, Teresa “Terry” L. Mullins of Newport, and Carol L. Mullins of Newport; sons, James “Pee Wee” Mullins, Jr., and wife Josie of Newport, and Joseph “Joey” A. Mullins of Newport; brother, Vernon Mullins of Richmond, KY; grandchildren, Ernest “Eret” Everington, Richard “Ricky” Everington, Zachary “Zach” Skinner, David Brooks, Jr. “Little David”, Johnathan Shane Rice, Geneva Jones, Michael “Mike” Brigman, Reanna Lopez “Rebob”, Elijah James Mullins “Eli”, Dylan McNair Mullins, Faye Lee Ann Mullins, and Nicole “Nikki” Mullins; great-grandchildren, Ernest R. Everington, IV. “E4”, Zachary Daine Skinner, Jr. “Daine”, Marley Lee Herbert, Lillian Herbert “Lilly”, Lucia “Lucy” SanGabriel, John Wyatt-Burris, Elliana Jones, Ean Jones, Kyleigh Ann Brigman, and a 10th great-grandchild on the way.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Grider and Geneva Mullins; and sisters, Dovie and Diane.

The family will receive friends between 6:00pm-8:00 pm on Tuesday, March 14,2017, at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City.
