James Wilson Willis, (Buddy), 87, of Broad Creek , passed away peacefully Monday, January 27, 2014 at his home surrounded by his loved ones after a long illness with dementia.
A funeral service will be held 3:00 pm Friday at Broad Creek Church of God with Rev. James Chadwick and Wesley Homes officiating. Interment will follow at Broad Creek Community Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years Vencia R. Willis, one son Wilson Willis and wife Lam, four daughters, Linda Golden and husband Homer, Debra Wagoner and husband Oscar, Loretta Taylor and husband Timothy, and Amanda Willis and wife Dawn, all of Broad Creek, twelve grandchildren, and fourteen great grandchildren. he is also survived by one sister, Sadie Mae Lewis of Gloucester, one brother, Bob C. Willis also of Broad Creek, many nieces and nephews.
He was born and raised in Broad Creek, and was a commercial fisherman most of his life until his retirement in 1992. He was a veteran of WWII, serving with the 8th Infantry Division in Germany, France, and Belgium, as an Infantry Rifleman.
He was a family man and loved spending time with his granchildren and great grandchildren whom were his pride and joy. He loved to go and visit with friends and relatives in Broad Creek, Salter Path, and many whom were in rest homes or the hospital until his illness took control of legs. James was always a hardworking man and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He believed in doing things right the first time and instilled that in his children. He was a man who never met a stranger. He could carry on a conversation with someone that he met for the first and you would have thought that they had always known each other. He was loved very much by his family and friends, and will be greatly missed.
He is preceded in death by his parents James (Jim) B. Loudora Salter Willis, son Richard Willis, two grandchildren Melinda Willis and Bernice Willis Jones, two sisters Unibelle Taylor and Georgie Golden, and one brother Ronnie Willis.
Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 pm Thursday at Broad Creek Church of God.
