James B. "Billy" Smith

James B. “Billy” Smith, US Army, Retired, 91, of Newport, passed away Wednesday, September 5­, 2018, at his home.

His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 10, 2018, at St. James United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Tom Supplee. Interment, with military honors, will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Newport.

Mr. Smith was an honored Army Veteran of World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam. His devotion and honor extended to his commitment to the Lord and his love for his church family at St. James United Methodist Church where he was a member. He was also a member of the American Legion in New Bern and a life member of the VFW Post 2986 in Newport. Mr. Smith was a Deputy Sherriff in Carteret County, Chief of Police in Newport for 5 years and retired police officer for Morehead City.

Mr. Smith was a decorated Army Veteran earning the Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal Silver Clasp, Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea).

He is survived by his wife, Esther, of the home; daughters, Judy S. Styron of Morehead City, Amy S. Larder of Newport, Esther S. Ballou of Morehead City; sons, James B. “Bucky” Smith, Jr. of Stella, William W. Smith of Stella, Harry H. Smith of Morehead City, Larry S. Smith of Greenville, Richard L. Smith of Newport; brother, Larry L. Smith and wife, Myrna, of Newport;14 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Liz Smith and sisters, Louise Williams and Minnie Thrower.

Family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, September 9, 2018, at Munden Funeral Home.
