James Perry Strickland, 85, of Benson, NC died Thursday, January 13, 2011 at Johnston Medical Center in Smithfield.
Services will be held 2:00 pm Monday at the Free Grace Wesleyan Church on Harkers Island with Rev. Clint Nelson officiating. Interment will follow at Vergie Mae Cemetery.
Mr. Strickland served in the US Army, the US Army Air Corps, and the 11th Air Borne Division during WWII and retired from Civil Service at Cherry Point with NARF. He was one of the REA Electric Power employees responsible for installing the first power poles to Harkers Island.
After retirement he gained employment with Sea Level Hospital Healthcare Team and worked for an additional ten years. He continued to work, becoming self-employed in a lawn management business up until his illness in October of 2010.
He is survived by his son, Ronnie E. Strickland and wife, Shannon of Salisbury, NC; daughter, Jane Perry Strickland of Benson, NC; two sisters, Mary Ballou of Fort Myers, FL and Irene Johnson of Four Oaks, NC; two brothers, Paul Strickland and John Strickland, both of Benson, NC; three grandchildren, Christopher Strickland, Adrian Strickland, and Kenneth Donleycott; four great-grandchildren, Zach, Jacob, Landon “Little Trooper”, and Abigail.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lida Gray Strickland.
The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 pm Sunday at the church.
