James Corbin Stevens, Sr.

James Corbin Stevens, Sr. (“Jim”) died on May 13, 2017 at Duke University Hospital.

Jim was born on May 29, 1946 in Wayne County, NC to Ralph Bryan Stevens  and Dorothy Elaine Stant Stevens. He graduated from Needham Broughton High School, and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Campbell University and a Master of Education from Brenau University. He served as a special agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and worked with the Secret Service to guard presidents and dignitaries. He earned two Treasury Department Special Awards.

After his medical retirement from the ATF, Jim began a career in private security and moved later into security management. A fierce businessman, Jim founded and developed security companies throughout the United States, always keeping an office near his home on the Bogue Sound. He had an acute business sense and was loyal to those he trusted. Jim was known for his relentless work ethic, quick wit, and dry sense of humor. He was proud of his work developing Security Solutions of America with his partner, Rich Frye, and served on the North Carolina Private Protective Services Board.

Jim was an avid fisherman and enjoyed spending time on his boat in the waters around the southern outer banks. He was extremely generous, always offering to take friends and family on boat rides or vacations. Jim took great pride in the many gifts he gave his wife, children, grandchildren, and those around him.

Jim loved his family above all else. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Ann Hamilton Stevens; his three children, James C. Stevens, Jr. and wife Brooks Harris Stevens, Alan R. Hilbert, Jr. and Melody Taylor, Margaret Hamilton Hollis and husband Robert E. Hollis, Jr.; grandchildren, Madeline G. Stevens, and Foster J. Stevens.  He also leaves behind his beloved, “good looking” aunt Hazel Stevens Hood, closest confidant, brother Alan Stevens and wife Melinda Collins Stevens, and brother David Stevens and wife Rose Stevens. He was an uncle to many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews whom he loved dearly. He was a mentor and supporter to countless colleagues and friends through the years.

A memorial service will be held for Jim Stevens at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City on May 26, 2017 at 11am.
