James Roger Morton

James Roger Morton, 90, of Emerald Isle, North Carolina, passed away Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at Camp Lejeune Naval Hospital.

A memorial service to honor James’ life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 6, 2024, at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Cedar Point.

James was born on August 29, 1933, in Mooresville, NC, to the late Kilian and Nellie Morton. He grew up in beautiful Mooresville and Carolina Beach, NC. James dedicated a huge portion of his life to serving his country. He enlisted in the US Army in 1953 and retired from the Reserves in 1986. After his exemplary service, he had a successful career as a floor manager at Intercraft and Uniglass in Statesville.

In 1986 he and his beloved wife Royce, made Emerald Isle their home and shared wonderful memories there. James loved the coast and spent many days fishing. He was also a member of his home church, Emmanuel Baptist Church in Cedar Point. May his dedication, patriotism, and warmth be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his daughters, Angela Suzanne Morton Shaffer (Doug) of Winston Salem, NC, Teresa Chapman of Monroe, NC; sons, Patrick Andrew Morton (Cindy) of Wilmington, NC, Donald Keith Chapman of Morehead City, NC, Roy Allan Chapman of Newport, NC; sisters, Jane Boan (Bert) of Statesville, NC, Mona Mills of Statesville, NC; brother, Jerry Morton (Betty) of Statesville, NC; grandchildren, Jesse, Randi, Rhett, Jamey, Lauren, Lexi, Dylan, Kendal, Zach, Kyle, Chase, Cory, Chad, Nicole, Brittny; and 21 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his wife, Royce Morton; son, James Roger Morton II; sister, Janice Gray; and brother, Kenny Morton.
