Morehead City

James "Jimmy" Louis Powell, 77, of Morehead City, North Carolina, passed away on Friday, July 19, 2024, at Carteret Health Care.

A memorial service to honor Jimmy’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, July 25th at First Presbyterian Church in Morehead City, officiated by Rev. Jake Young. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., Wednesday, July 24th at Munden Funeral Home.

Jimmy was born on March 13, 1947, in Morehead City, NC, to the late Edward and Vivian Powell. He was blessed to have a wonderful aunt and uncle, Mavis and Gilbert Glancey, who played a huge role in his life as he was raised by them for the majority of his upbringing. A native of Beaufort, Jimmy graduated as Valedictorian from Beaufort High School with the Class of 1965. He went on to pursue higher education at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

Well known in our community through his company Powell Surveying, Jimmy assisted numerous families over the decades. His technical skills, interpersonal skills, and passion for accuracy were just a few traits that made him stand out in his profession. Jimmy could do complex projects with ease, and his customers were always confident in his work.

A strong believer in community involvement, Jimmy was a Master Mason at the Morehead City Lodge and was a member of the Eastern Star. He is well remembered for his faithful role as the past Grand Royal Patron in the Order of the Amaranth.

Jimmy loved keeping busy and believed strongly in keeping fit. He was an avid bike rider and runner, competing in Triathlons, and running numerous Marathons.

Jimmy’s greatest happiness in life was his family. He was blessed with 54 years with his lovely wife Paulette, they built a beautiful life together and were blessed with 2 children. It’s easily said though that his greatest joy in life were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were the apple of his eye.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Elizabeth Paulette Powell; daughter, Julie Small of Newport; son, Kevin Powell of Raleigh; grandchildren, Samantha Alvarado (Nathaniel) of Newport and Charles Thompson (Chelsea) of Havelock; great-grandchildren, Ezmia, Santiago, Elias; nieces and nephews, Dianne, Larry, Jody, Timmy, and Tonya; and cousins, Daniel, Joshua, Jasmine, and Jessica.

In addition to his parents, Jimmy was preceded in death by his brothers, Edward T. Powell Jr., Billy Powell, and Joe Powell; and son-in-law, Daniel Small.

As an expression of sympathy, flowers are welcome.
