James Irvin Piner, Sr.,81, of Beaufort, died Saturday, March 3, 2012.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday March 7, 2012 at Munden Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ernest Laxton and Rev. Paul Harris officiating. Burial will follow in his home commuity Victoria Cemetary, in Marshallberg, NC.
Jimmy spent his entire life doing what he loved most, playing in the water, being a son and grandson of commercial fishermen. The call of the sea is what his heart felt. Following graduation from Smyrna High School he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and attended Phiffer College with a degree in business. He eventually served twenty years as commanding officer of the Fort Macon United States Coast Guard Reserve. He retired at the rank of Commander. He worked at Carteret Towing Company and eventually became part owner of Morehead City Towing Company. He retired in 2001 from the North Carolina Ferry System as assistant ferry director.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Jarman Piner of the home; son, James Irvin Piner, Jr. and wife Teri Price Piner of Sea Gate; three grandchildren, James Michael Piner and wife Abigail Piner of Emerald Isle, Christa Piner Laxton and husband Phillip Walker Laxton of Beaufort, and Kalah Piner and husband Patrick Piner of Beaufort; two great-grandchildren, Travis Walker Laxton and Kolby Grace Piner; two brothers, Robert Bruce Piner and wife Susan Garlow Piner of Morehead City and Norwood Chapel Piner of Beaufort; brother-in-law, Robert Armour of Battle Creek, MI; also many loving nieces and nephews, family, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ellen and Norwood Piner, sister, Lois Piner Armour, grandparents, Melissa and Lambert Guthrie, and Mary and Wilkie Piner.
The family will receive friends 6:00 - 8:00 pm Tuesday at the funeral home.
