James I. Phillips, Jr.

James I. Phillips, Jr., 76, of Morehead City died Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at Carteret General Hospital.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Morehead City with Rev. Tim Havlicek and Rev. Bart Edwards officiating. A graveside service will be held 2:00 pm Sunday at Sharon Cemetery in Mt. Gilead, NC, officiated by daughter-in-law, Robbie Phillips, candidate for the Presbyterian Church, USA.

Mr. Phillips retired as area manager for CP&L after serving from the mountains to the coast. He served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Carteret General Hospital for many years. Additionally, he served as a member of the Board of Directors for Hospice of Carteret County, past president of the Rotary Club of Morehead City, and member of the Carteret County Planning Commission. Other areas of community service included serving as president of the Carteret County Economic Development Council, member of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce, member of the Carteret County ABC Board and a member of the Board of Directors of the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum.

He served as Deacon and Elder of the Presbyterian Church USA at the First Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville, Wadesboro and Morehead City, and Grace Presbyterian Church in Beaufort. He served as Moderator of the Presbytery of Coastal Carolina and was a member of the Committee on Ministry, Class of 2006 and the Presbytery Council, Class of 2009.

Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife, Miriam Blake Phillips of the home; two sons, James Ira "Jamey" Phillips, III and wife, Robbie of Beaufort and Howard Andrew Phillips and wife, Tami of Columbia, NC; four grandchilden, Melissa Phillips, James I. "Jay" Phillips, IV, Kristi Phillips, and Megan Phillips; great-grandson, Ronan Carr; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Saturday one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Memorial Fund, 1604 Arendell Street, Morehead City, NC 28557.
