James Franklin Meadows, fondly known as "Cap'n Frank," embarked on his earthly voyage on January 9, 1939, and peacefully set sail on February 3, 2024, leaving a legacy as vast and deep as the ocean he held dear.
A memorial service, with military honors, to honor Cap'n Frank’s life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 9th, 2024, at First Baptist Church in Morehead City.
Cap'n Frank's heart was forever tethered to the sea, where he found solace, adventure, and true connection with the Creator. He shared his passion with those closest to him, earning him the endearing nickname "Cap'n Frank" among his dearest friends.
With steadfast integrity, Cap'n Frank honorably served his country, first in the Navy and later retiring from the Coast Guard. He instilled his love and respect for the sea in others, embodying the virtue of a true sailor.
Navigating life's journey, he discovered his anchor in Amber Oliphant, his lifelong love. They sailed through the seas of marriage, raising up three children and supporting each other in sickness and in health.
Cap'n Frank was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Morehead City, and found joy and camaraderie among his church family, particularly cherishing the fellowship of the men in his Sunday school class.
Despite being a man of few words, his wisdom resonated deeply. His gentle spirit and signature winks endeared him to countless hearts, especially those of his adoring grandchildren and great grandchildren.
As he embarks on his final voyage, Cap'n Frank leaves behind a wake of cherished memories and lives touched by his kindness and love.
While his absence leaves a void, there is solace in knowing that he now rests in the embrace of his Lord and Savior, eternally navigating the open seas of heaven. Fair winds and following seas, Cap'n Frank. Your presence will be deeply missed, but your spirit will forever sail on.
He is survived by his daughter, Amber Melissa Patterson, and husband Greg of Newport; son, Jamie Meadows of Beaufort; grandchildren, Caitlin Schryver and husband Tyler, Alli Davis and husband Shelby, Austin Patterson and wife Madi, Tyler Patterson and wife Anna Lane and Julia Patterson; great-grandchildren, Evan Schryver and Parker James Davis; sister-in-law, Carolyn Meadows; niece, Lenore Meadows-Taylor; nephews, Dr. Steven Meadows and John Meadows; and his faithful furry companion, Scooter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Edith Meadows; wife, Amber Meadows; brother, Robert "Bob" Meadows; and son, Jody Meadows.
Special thanks to his caregivers and nurses at Carteret Health where he received excellent care and the wonderful staff of the Hospice House who treated him with dignity and love.
