James McClure

Jim McClure, 88, of Harkers Island, died Sunday, April 7th, 2013 at Cherry Point Bay Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday at Munden Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Price officiating.  Interment will follow at Vergie Mae Cemetery Harkers Island.

Jim was an 88 year old World War II Veteran who served in the Marine Corps.  While stationed at Cherry Point he met his soul mate Annie Salter while visiting Carl Lewis’ store on Harkers Island. Jim and Ann would be married nearly 70 years.  They would have a son Jim, a daughter Joann and later a son Joey.  After the Marine Corp Jim and Ann attended Kentucky Christian College and Jim felt God calling him to be a Pastor.  Jim was a pastor in Kentucky, Ohio and North Carolina.  He pastored the Highpoint Church of Christ, Athens Chapel Church of Christ in Bath and then after moving back to Harker’s Island he pastored the Live Oak Grove Church of Christ at Russell’s Creek in Beaufort for 22 years. While at Live Oak Grove  Jim was a bi-vocational pastor who also worked at Cherry Point in the NARF until he retired in 1986.  Jim was a gifted singer who loved singing songs of faith in God. He often did solos at church and for weddings and funerals. He passed his love of music on to his children. Jim loved the outdoors. Fishing, hunting, and target shooting when time would allow. In his younger years he was a competitive weight lifter and won 3rd place in 1961 and 2nd place in 1962 in the Carolina’s AAU Heavyweight division. Jim was involved with Carteret Writers, served a term as Commander of his local DAV Chapter 41, and loved to talk to you about the bible and his faith in Jesus Christ anywhere and anytime.

Jim is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Ann McClure of the home; two sons, Jim McClure of Williamston and Joey McClure and wife Elana of Morehead City; brother Charles McClure  of Oklahoma City, OK ; and three grandchildren, Carlton McClure, Ryan McClure and Breana McClure.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Munden Funeral Home.
