James "Jim" P. Lewis Sr., 87, of Harkers Island , died Thursday March 7, 2013, at Cross Creek Health Care Center, Swan Quarter, NC.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 am Saturday at Harkers Island Pentecostal Holiness Church with Mr. Anthony Nelson and Rev. Louis Bass officiating. Interment will follow at Vergie Mae Cemetery.
Jim graduated from Smyrna High School, and served in the US Army in Company L. the 11th Infantry. He received the Purple Heart, European, African, Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbons, two Bronze Battle Stars, and Good Conduct Ribbons for his courageous service to God and his country. He was a member of Harkers Island Pentecostal Holiness Church and served as a Deacon, Sunday school teacher, Secretary/ Treasurer, V.P. of Young People Service, and he ushered school graduates into church for 35 years.
He is survived by his wife Millie Ruth Lewis of the home: son James P. Lewis, Jr., and wife Vanda of Harkers Island: two granddaughters Stephanie and husband William Rogers, III of Newport and Jamison Lewis of Harkers Island.
He was preceded in death by his parents William C. Lewis and Nancy E. Lewis, sisters Helen Willis, Annis Hooper, Grace Long, Daphne Willis, and Vida Fulcher, brothers Lorenzo Lewis, Roy Lewis, Charles Lewis, and Roland Lewis.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
