James “Al” Lewis, 65, of Morehead City passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at Carteret Health Care with his children by his side.

A memorial service will be held 4:00 pm Sunday, January 17, 2016 at Munden Funeral Home with Joel G. Hancock officiating.

Al was born August 6, 1950 in Johnston County.  He attended East Carteret High School and was in the class of 1968. After graduation he attended Cape Fear Community College where he studied Marine Technology.

One of his greatest passions in life was being on the water. Having served as Captain & mate on many vessels along the east coast for 40 years he is best known for his work on the family owned boat called C-oats, his rig-tying ability, and his love for the catch.  After serving his time to the sea he moved on to boat building and woodworking. He lived most of his life on Harkers Island.

If asked what Al was most proud of it would be his children. Erik and Allison were the “best thing he ever did.” He loved watching them grow and couldn’t be more proud of the successful lives they have.  After the birth of his grandchildren he quickly and proudly fell into the role of Granddaddy. He adored spending time with and playing with the kids. The anchor in his life was his loving mother. He spent the majority of his life by her side, and was the true definition of a Mama’s boy. He loved her dearly as did she.

He is survived by his mother, Ida Lewis; his children a son Erik A. Lewis and wife Elizabeth; daughter, Allison L. Struyk and husband Russell; Uncles Don Coats and Ray Coats and wife Nancy; his beloved grandchildren, and his former wife Virginia Piner.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard A. Lewis; Grandparents, Cara and Malcom Coats; Uncle James Coats; two Aunts, Lee Coats and   Iris Coats.

In lieu of flowers donation can be made in memory of Al at Carteret Hospice House.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Munden Funeral Home.
