James Hunter

James Oliver Hunter, 68, of Pine Knoll Shores and Allison Park, PA died Tuesday, August 24, 2010, at Carteret General Hospital.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 10:00 am in Mt. Royal Memorial Park, 2700 Mt. Royal Blvd., Glenshaw, PA.

Dr. Hunter was born September 28, 1941 to Grace C. Hunter and the late Howard O. Hunter. He was raised in Pittsburgh, PA, and graduated from Grove City College. He subsequently earned a Master?s of Public Administration and an Honorary Doctorate from Penn State University and a JD from the University of Pittsburgh. He received a Doctorate of Legal Letters from Grove City College.

The majority of his professional career was spent at the University of Pittsburgh where he served as Associate Provost, Associate Dean of the Law School. Assistant University Counsel, and Assistant to the Chancellor. He was appointed by former PA Governor Thornburgh to serve as Pennsylvania?s Commissioner for Higher Education. He served as President of Point Park College, in Pittsburgh and was a partner in the Freeman/Hunter Associates Consulting Firm.

He served as First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force and Air National Guard Medical Service Corps during the Vietnam War.

While living in Pine Knoll Shores, he served on the town?s Board of Commissioner and as Mayor Pro Tem. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Country Club of the Crystal Coast.

He is survived by his wife Betty K. Hunter; mother Grace C. Hunter; two daughters, Stacey Hecht and husband Stephen of Minnesota, and Amy Zugell and husband Daniel of Pennsylvania; three grandchildren, Caroline Zugell, Thomas Zugell, and Rosalind Hecht; and a brother, Robert, of Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Carteret County, PO Drawer 1619, Morehead City, NC 28557.
