James Levons Clark

October 21, 1940 — February 8, 2025

Newport

James Levons Clark, 84 of Newport, NC, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, February 8, 2025, surrounded by his family.

His memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 12th at Newport Church of Christ, 2101 South Lakeview Drive in Newport, officiated by Minister Craig Hearne of New Bern. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., Tuesday, February 11th at Newport Church of Christ.

James was born to the late Garfield and Lottie Clark at their family home in Newport on October 21, 1940. James grew up working on the family farm in Newport, with his six siblings. He knew what hard work was, at a very early age.

After graduating from Newport High School, he joined the United States Army, where he served as a Sergeant in the 515th Military Police Company in Fort Lee, Virginia. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, he returned to Newport and declared to his wife and family that they could build a wall around Newport, where he never intended to leave again. His love for Newport was evident through his lifelong commitment to the Town. James served as a volunteer Fireman with the Newport Fire Dept., Auxiliary Police officer with the Newport Police Dept., Member of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), and a Member of the Newport Town Council for 10 years.

James was the sole owner of Carpet Crafters and Clarks Seamless Gutters for more than 25 years, before becoming employed with NADEP, MCAS Cherry Point where he retired.

James was known by his friends to have a profound love for his Lord and Family. He served as the preacher for the Newport Church of Christ for over 15 years. He continued to preach until his illness prevented him from doing so, in the last few months.

He was widely known for his ability to build or repair anything. If not swinging on the front porch and playing checkers with his granddaughters, he could often be found helping friends and family with whatever their current project may be.

James is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Sandra Clark of the home; sons, Jeff Clark and wife Angela of Newport and Robbie Clark of Newport; granddaughters, Alex Padgett and husband Andrew, Mandi Wagner and husband Cole, Millicent Clark and Madison Clark; and great grandchildren, Ellie Padgett and Warren Wagner.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his infant son, James Charles Clark; his sister, Mildred Clark Spence; and 5 brothers, Walter Howard Clark, John Herny Clark, Eddie Thomas Clark, Everette Glenn Clark, and Elmer Lewis Clark.

As an expression of sympathy, flowers are welcome.
