James Preston Blackwell

June 5, 1929 — April 24, 2012

James Preston Blackwell, 82, of Pine Knolls Shores NC, died Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at Onslow Memorial Hospital, Jacksonville, NC.  He was born  June 5, 1929 in Walker County Alabama.

The family and church will conduct a Memorial Service at 10:30am, Friday, May 4, 2012 at Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church ELCA, 201 E. Fort Macon Road, Atlantic Beach, NC.  Officiating will be Pastor Scott Berry.  The family will receive friends following the Memorial Service.

He is survived by a son, John P. Blackwell of Asheville, NC; a niece Glynda Naugle Gregory and husband Gregg of  Kensington Maryland;  a nephew, Andy Naugle and wife Cindy of Brookeville, Maryland; great nephews Clinton Naugle of California and Benjamin Naugle of  Utah; a great niece, Peggy Sue Naugle of Brookeville, Maryland; a brother-in-law Larry Talbert and wife Helen of Greenville NC; a sister-in-law Lillian Gertrude (Trudy) Adams of Bailey Island, Maine.  “Uncle Jimmy’s” local family and caregivers were Ann Webster and husband Rev. Jerry Webster and Michael, Clayton and Corey Webster.

Mr. Blackwell was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Talbert Blackwell; his parents Clinton Preston Blackwell and Sue Blanton Blackwell and a sister Elsie Sue Blackwell Naugle.

He graduated in 1947 from R. J. Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, NC and served in the US Army from July 15, 1952 to June 21, 1954.  He became a member
of Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church in 1979.

He worked for W. G. White Grocery in Winston-Salem and later was a produce manager at Food Faire in Winston-Salem. After moving to Atlantic Beach he worked for Pack-a-Sack until obtaining his NC real estate license. He worked with several real estate companies in Carteret County until opening Blackwell Realty in Pine Knoll Shores. He retired in 1999.  He and his wife Doris were instrumental in finding a permanent home for Hope Mission.

Beekeeping, piloting small planes, and carving were some of his varied hobbies but fishing was his favorite.  He spent many hours fishing with friends and family at Sportsman Pier and on his boat.

A special thank you goes to the staff at the Alzheimer’s Related Care (ARC) Community in Jacksonville, NC  for the excellent care they proved him for the past year.

The family will be at 111 Mimosa Blvd. Pine Knoll Shores NC.
