GySgt, James Alfred Berryhill, USMC Retired, 76, of Havelock, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loved ones on March 22, 2025.
A funeral service to honor James’s life will be held at 9:30 a.m., Thursday, March 27 at First Presbyterian Church in Morehead City, officiated by Rev. Jake Young. Interment, with military honors, will follow at 12 p.m. at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville. The family will receive friends the evening prior from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., Wednesday, March 26, at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City.
James was born on July 2, 1948, in Inkster, Michigan, to the late Arthur and Birdie Berryhill. His legacy is marked by his honorable service in the United States Marine Corps, where he dedicated 23 years of his life, including a tour in the Vietnam War. His strength of character, perseverance, and commitment were evident throughout his military career.
Following his retirement from the Marine Corps, James contributed to his community by working for the Craven County School System, and later for the City of Havelock for ten years. He found great joy in his work with Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR), also known as Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS), at the Bowling Center.
An avid athlete, James enjoyed bowling and playing softball in his younger years. His passion for sports extended beyond personal enjoyment, as he invested in the lives of youth through volunteer work, coaching children’s bowling and assisting with Girl Scouts.
A faithful member of First Presbyterian Church in Morehead City, James loved the Lord and was deeply committed to his faith. He will be fondly remembered as a devoted husband for 49 years, an affectionate and supportive father, and a proud grandfather and great-grandfather.
Those remaining to cherish his memory are his loving and devoted wife, Linda Berryhill; daughters, Ellie Jurasich (Jim) of New Bern, NC, Cathy Bostian (Gavin) of Wake Forest, NC, and Jennifer Myers (James) Hollywood, MD; sister, Marie Inez Miller (Donald) Water Valley, MS; brother, Roger D. Berryhill of Millington, TN; grandchildren, Jenna Jurasich (Marcus), Justin Jurasich, Jacob Bostian (Cassi), Caleb Bostian (Crystal), Christopher Bostian, Alex Bostian, Andrew Bostian, Alyssa Myers, and Kayla Myers (Andrew); great-grandson, Maverick Bostian; and his side kick, his dog, Snickers.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his sisters, Lou S. Brown and Gladys I. Solieu; and brothers, Bobby C. Berryhill and Billy Joe Story.
