Jacob "Jake" Winberry Godwin, Sr.
January 8, 1933 — March 2, 2012
Jacob "Jake" Winberry Godwin, Sr., passed away Friday, March 2, 2012 at Carteret General Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. He was a tough fighter right to the end.
A memorial service will be held 4:00 pm Tuesday at Munden Funeral Home Chapel with Rodney Kemp officiating.
Jacob was born in Stella, NC on January 8, 1933 to Lila Conway Godwin and Wilson Chance Godwin. He was a graduate of Pollocksville High School, served in the Korean War and completed his B.S. at East Carolina University. He was an administrator, teacher, and drivers education instructor at Morehead City High School and West Carteret from 1958-1991. Upon retirement, he enjoyed fishing and gardening.
He is survived by two children, Susan Godwin Jones and Carl of Davidson, NC, and Jacob Winberry Godwin, Jr., of Lumberton, NC: two grandchildren Ryan Jones and Keary Jones both of Davidson, NC: siblings Preston Godwin, Jimmy Godwin, Myrtle Wade, and Bessie Morse.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Mamie Grace Godwin,and sibilings Wilson Godwin, Jr., Billy Godwin, and Evelyn Carter.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the American Cancer Society 930-B Wellness Dr. Greenville, NC 27834.
