Jack Varrion Guthrie, 78, of Harkers Island, passed away on Monday, March 20, 2017 at Crystal Coast Hospice House.

A funeral service for Jack will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at the Harkers Island United Methodist Church with the Rev. Brad Williams officiating. Interment will follow in Vergie Mae Cemetery.

Jack and his loving wife, Susanne would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on March 23, 2017. Jack earned his BS in Science from East Carolina University. Jack was one of the founders of Harkers Island Rescue Squad as well as on the Board of Directors for the Water Company. Jack taught for 11 years with the Carteret County School system at Smyrna High School and Harkers Island Elementary. Jack retired from the Marine Fisheries as a Biologist Technician. He loved and was passionate about commercial fishing. He had a natural curiosity about science and life. He loved to travel and entertain. Many people will remember him for his fish frys and clam bakes. He was very open to the ideas and cultures in the countries that he visited. Jack was always kind to others, especially Kris Novelli and her children, David and Laura, and Dan Yeomans’ grandchildren Zackary and Ashley.

Jack is survived by his devoted wife Susanne Guthrie of the home; sister, Rita Marion Hill and husband William of Harkers Island; foreign exchange students, who were like family; Vicky Jungmann husband Ole and children Nils and Lars of Germany, Romona Zeuner of Germany, Suvi Marvola husband Janne and children Lauri, Helmi and Oiva of Finland, Noora Eerola and husband Antti of Finland, Priska Sorg of Switzerland, Paula Myllykoski of Finland, Bianca Gähweiler of Switzerland, Sophie Wölfel of Germany, Che Won Yim of South Korea and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Right Guthrie and Carrie Moore Guthrie; sisters, Muriel Lee Salter, Estelle Fulcher, Elva Irvine; brothers, Leslie Guthrie and Donald Guthrie.

A visitation for Jack will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at Harkers Island United Methodist Church on Wednesday, March 22, 2017.
