On Saturday, November 1st, Jack Goodwin of Sea Level, North Carolina, passed away after a long, rich life.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate Jack on Sunday, November 9th at 3:00 p.m., at the Munden Funeral Home, located at 2112 Arendell St., Morehead City, NC.
Born in Oriental, NC, to CPT Murray ‘Ross’ Goodwin (Cedar Island, NC) and Nancy ‘Margaret’ Casey (Buxton, NC), he is survived by his daughter, Amy Elizabeth Goodwin; granddaughter, Kalie Elizabeth Brown; great grandson, William Alexander Brown; best friend, Marcus Goodwin; sister, Margaret Williams; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
As a child, Jack moved with his family to Norfolk, VA, and, as a young man, served in the US Army in Germany. Jack went on to graduate from the College of William and Mary with a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature and a Master’s degree from Catholic University in Library Science. He began his career as the law librarian at the College of William and Mary before moving to Washington, DC to become a librarian and scholar at the Smithsonian Institute and Library of Congress. His work focused on the history of technology and the interpretation and preservation of contemporary American culture. In keeping with his lifelong passion for Southern history and Down East culture, he retired to Sea Level and immersed himself in the collection and preservation of Carteret County culture, becoming one of the founders of the History Place, a history museum in Morehead City. Jack was ever sensitive to and alarmed by inequity in society. He participated in the Civil Rights movement and was a liberal, progressive thinker during decades of fundamental change in America despite the risks to his personal safety. Jack championed race, gender, and sexual equality and used his charisma to bring diverse groups of people together with seeming ease. Jack will be long remembered by all he touched.
A reception will be held following the service at the History Place, located at 1008 Arendell St., Morehead City, NC. In keeping with Jack’s wishes, in lieu of flowers, donations in his honor can be made to the History Place.
