Capt. Ira Douglas Murphy of Marshallberg and Chapel Hill, NC, age 84 beloved husband and favorite uncle, died Sunday, May 27, 2012 at Carteret General Hospital.
A Memorial Service is pending.
Known to some as Uncle Ira Douglas, others as Ira, and depending what part of the world you were in he might be Doug, he was the same man who came from humble beginnings, working on a fishing boat or in a field, to ship’s master (Captain). His last command was a 960 foot container ship. At age 80 he retired from the Merchant Marines and spent his time renovating his house on Polly Hill in Marshallberg, on his boat in Florida, or in Chapel Hill where he and his wife had a condo. He had the distinct record of having never lost any cargo nor failing to arrive at his port of destination. He will be greatly missed by his relatives and friends.
The grandson of Franklin Peirce Lewis, the Cape Lookout Lighthouse Keeper, and son of Iradell Murphy, a hardworking local fisherman, he fell in love with the ocean at 16. Retiring as the oldest sea captain in recent history, he never forgot his Marshallberg roots.
He is survived by his wife Edith Bisby Nye Murphy and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by parents, Iradell and Mary Murphy; sisters, Helma Phelps, Leonda “Pat” Henninger, Mary Bell Lewis, and Martha Frances Gillikin. His death ended this precious generation.
