Ikie Kyndall Guthrie, 88, of Harkers Island, passed away Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at Carteret General Hospital.
His funeral service will be held at 11 am Saturday and the viewing will be held from 6 to 8pm Friday, both at the Harkers Island United Methodist Church where he was a lifelong member.
Mr. Guthrie served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and participated in several major campaigns in the war including the D-Day invasion at Omaha Beach and the battle of Okinawa.
After the war he continued a long service with the Department of the Navy and retired with 34 years. He also enjoyed many years working with the Carteret County Sheriff’s Department. Mr. Guthrie established several county businesses including Seaside at Harkers Island.
He is survived by his wife, Jacquelyn H. Guthrie, daughter, Brenda and husband Rocky Best, two sons, Michael Dean and wife LeeAnn Guthrie, James Barry and wife Mila Guthrie, and thoroughly enjoyed his grandchildren, Barry Jr, Evan, Peyton, Aubrey, and Ayden Guthrie. Seven step-children, Jacque Sue Brown, Ralph Hancock, Minta Hale, Denny Hancock, Michelle Willis, Michael Hancock, and Carol Ann Hancock Snethen, many, many step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 48 years, Hester G. Guthrie.
Memorials may be made to the Harkers Island Methodist Church children ministry or First Friday Fellowship.
