Peletier

Hugh Henry Hughes, 77, of Peletier, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, March 3, 2025.

A memorial mass will be held at 11:30 a.m., Monday, March 10th at St. Mildred’s Catholic Church in Swansboro, presided by Fr. David Miller. The family will receive friends prior to the memorial service. Following the service, all are welcome to join them for a luncheon at the Church.

Born on December 27, 1947, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Hugh was the cherished son of the late Hugh and Margaret Hughes. He had a distinguished career in Northern Virginia as a professional land surveyor. He was also a Deputy Surveyor of the District of Columbia where he served as the President of the Washington DC Chapter of Land Surveyors.

Hugh enjoyed the great outdoors where he kept busy with activities such as archery, hunting, and target shooting, always appreciating the thrill of adventure. He loved his dogs, Edgar, Gus, and Izzie, whose playful spirits provided him with endless entertainment.

After relocating to the Crystal Coast, Hugh became a devoted member of St. Mildred's Catholic Church in Swansboro. Hugh especially treasured his time spent with his wife, sons and grandchildren. Hugh's love for his family was evident not only in the fun moments they shared but also in his lectures which were filled with his caring advice and concern.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 51 years, Janet Hughes; sons, Scott Hughes (Susan) of Exter, PA, David Hughes (Anjanette) of Newport, NC, and Tom Hughes of Jacksonville, NC; brother, Henry Frank “Hank” Hughes (Patti) of Haymarket, VA; grandchildren, Scott Hughes, Evan Hughes, Anna Hughes, Abby Hughes, Sam Hughes, Tom Hughes, and Mason Hughes; and great-grandchildren, Onyx Hughes and Oliver Hughes.

In addition to his parents, Hugh was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Cathy and Andy Bourdess.

As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mildred’s Catholic Church for their Building Fund, 653 Old Hammock Rd., Swansboro, NC 28584.
