Howard Mitchell Cannon, 66, of Ocean has passed away peacefully at his home on Friday November 2, 2012. He was surrounded by family and friends when his battle with cancer ended.
No formal services will be held.
He was born at the old Morehead Hospital on 10th of November 1945, second oldest child of the late Willie Linwood and Mary Caroline Cannon of Newport, NC. Mitchell entered the U.S.Navy on 17th of January 1963 at the Great Lake Naval Training Center, Great Lake Illinois. This Vietnam war vetereans naval career spanned over 21 years of service with nine different duty locations, retiring from service on 31st of January 1984 at NAS Chase Field, Beeville, TX. After leaving the Navy he spent several years working on aircraft engines at Cherry Point MCAS. He was a very active lifetime member of the VFW post 8986. He had a great passion for being in the water on Bogue Sound.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Ruth Ann Cannon of Ocean, NC; daughter Dawn Hoover of Beebe, AK: son Michael Cannon of Newport, NC, and son Kelly Cannon stationed in Hawaii: a older sister Sadie Muriel Eno of New Bern, NC, and younger sister Sylvia Adams Kyle of Broad Creek, NC: a little brother Curtis Lynwood Cannon of Newport, NC: and his faithful companions April and Biscuit.
