Holbrook Buckmaster Coyne

October 29, 1945 — July 28, 2014

Holbrook Buckmaster Coyne, Jr., 68, of Charlotte passed away unexpectedly on July 28, 2014.  He was surrounded by his loving family and will forever be missed.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday August 2, 2014 at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Morehead City.

“Buck” was born in Danville, Virginia on October 29, 1945.  He grew up in Virginia and Connecticut and attended Kent School in Kent, Connecticut before moving to Spartanburg, South Carolina.  He found his home in the South.  Buck became an accomplished track star and was also the starting quarterback at Spartanburg High School.  Buck and his family met many life-long friends in Spartanburg and always cherished those friends and memories.  After spending his high school days in Spartanburg, he left South Carolina for Davidson College in North Carolina.  Buck was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity and the Davidson track team.  He entered Officer Training School during The Vietnam War and achieved the rank of Captain in US Army. After the War, he returned to Davidson and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree.  Buck then entered and graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Law.  He married the love of his life Nina Carson Williams while attending law school and soon settled in Morehead City.  Buck and Nina adored Morehead City immediately.  They loved the town and their amazing friends.  The couple had two sons, Brook and Charlie, and enjoyed many many happy years in Morehead City.  The family treasured boat excursions to “The Island”, skiing vacations in Vermont and father-son trips to Atlanta Braves games.

After Nina passed away in 1993, Buck married Mary Criswell and moved to Ada, Oklahoma.  He enjoyed many good years in Ada and had a very successful law practice.  Buck also became very close with his two step-daughters Anne and Spencer Criswell and saw them grow into fine young women.  The family thanks Mary Criswell and Connie Byrum for providing many happy years later in his life.

Buck will be missed by many.  He is best known for his sarcastic sense of humor, love of Carolina, the law, fine food and a stiff Dewar’s & water.

He is preceded in death by his wife Nina Williams Coyne, his mother and father Kitty Coyne and Holbrook Buckmaster Coyne.

He is survived by is his two sons, Holbrook “Brook” Buckmaster Coyne, III and wife Alison, and Charles “Charlie” Williams Coyne and wife Julie, two sisters Kathy Belcher and Clare Coyne, and 3 grandchildren, Jack, Joey and Charles.

Visitation will be immediately following the Saturday service in the St. Andrews church yard.
