Herbert "Fred" Rea Dickinson

May 24, 1941 — March 21, 2014

Herbert Rea "Fred" Dickinson, 72, of Morehead City, passed away on March 21, 2014 after a short but courageous battle with cancer.

There will be a private memorial service for family members only.

Born in Danville, VA to Herbert and Ola Ferrell Dickinson, Fred grew up in Richmond, VA where he graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and attended Richmond Poly Technical Institute. He spent most of his adult life in Kinston, NC where he was in the automobile business.

He is survived by his wife Judith Strawbridge Dickinson of their home in Morehead City, NC; his three children, Heather Dickinson Schultz of Emerald Isle, NC, Joshua Eugene Dickinson and wife Leslie of Benton, AR, and Jacob Rea Dickinson of Kinston, NC, a daughter from a previous marriage Rachel Michele Dickinson Gately of Santa Barbara, CA, a brother Gerald Wayne Dickinson and companion LP Fones of Richmond, VA, and an aunt, Ester Ferrell of Danville, VA. His grandchildren include Spencer James and Sailor Noelle Schultz, Walker Henry Dickinson and Lillian Mae and Cedar Kendal Gately.

A special thank you to Dr. Cuervo and his staff at the RAAB clinic for their care and support, to the doctors and third floor nurses in PCU at Carteret General Hospital who gave their all to his care during the last week, and to the staff at Coleman Radiation Clinic who he liked to call his "girlfriends" as he underwent radiation in his early weeks of treatment.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in his name to the American Cancer Society 930-B Wellness Dr. Greenville, NC 27834.
