Helen Salter Nelson Wade

September 23, 1928 — November 16, 2018

Atlantic

Helen Salter Nelson Wade, 90 of Atlantic, passed away peacefully Friday, November 16, 2018, at Snug Harbor on Nelson Bay.

Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, November 19, 2018, at Atlantic United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Terry McInnis.  Interment will follow at Atlantic Community Cemetery.

Helen was born on Sunday, September 23, 1928 in Morehead City to Calvin and Polly Salter.  She was the second daughter to come into this loving home, and later, a son would complete the family.

Helen attended Charles S. Wallace High School in Morehead City and graduated in 1947.  Her senior year, she would begin a “courtship” with Adron S. Nelson.  They married on Sunday, June 15, 1947, in Atlantic where the two would begin their married life and family together.  Adron, died in 1971, leaving his family much too soon.

Although some are only blessed once with a love of a lifetime, Helen was blessed beyond measure as she would experience two.  In 1977, Helen married William Wade, affectionately known to his family as “Cappy,” because he had been a captain throughout much of his lifetime, and she would later become his mate, both on boats and in life.

Helen was a devoted member for over 65 years, of Atlantic Missionary Baptist Church where she faithfully served in many capacities.

Helen began her career as the switchboard operator and later advanced to a bookkeeper in the finance office at Sea Level Hospital.  After a brief retirement, Helen was asked to return to work part-time in the Dietary Department at Taylor Extended Care.

Helen is fondly remembered by friends and family to be a loving, sweet and gentle soul.

Left to cherish Helen’s memory are her sons, Keith Nelson and wife Yvonne of Kinston, Paul Nelson and wife Fran of Williston and Mark Nelson of Beaufort; step-children, Julie Halsey, Janet Barefoot and Bill Ed Wade; 5 grandchildren, Adron Nelson and wife Sharon, Courtney Braswell and husband Scott, Polly Nelson and friend Susie Hicks, Michael Nelson and Amanda Nelson; 6 great-grandchildren, David Cahoon and wife Lauren, Samantha Nelson, Garrett Braswell, Spencer Nelson, Griffin Braswell, Grady Braswell; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her siblings, Flaurendia "Flossie" Lewis and Calvin Salter; husbands, Adron S. Nelson and William “Cappy” Wade; step-son, Jimmy Wade; and nephew William “Billy” Salter.

Family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, November 19, 2018, at Atlantic United Methodist Church.
