Helen Carlene Cates Moorefield, PhD
Helen Moorefield, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed from this life on October 4, 2012 at Carteret General Hospital after a courageous fight against many debilitating medical conditions. She fought a good fight to remain with her loving family. She was seventy five years old.
Helen was born to Dewey Jones Cates and Novella Ladd Cates on November 12, 1936 in High Point, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, C. D. Cates, and sister, Arlene Hall.
Helen was so proud of her work in Psychology and performed her duties in the profession with the utmost skill and professionalism. She received her PhD in Psychology from North Carolina State University in 1981. Helen retired from the profession as the Mental Health Director for Sampson and Duplin Counties in North Carolina. Helen had a great love of playing partner’s bridge and music. She enjoyed going to Atlantic City, Reno and Las Vegas to play Blackjack. Her family will miss her singing “In the Pines” and “Mountain Dew” around the home. She enjoyed fishing and always loved telling about her and, her husband, Clyde’s fishing in Santee-Cooper when she had a small bass up to the boat and it was eaten by a monster bass, which startled her immensely.
Helen leaves behind the love of her life, her husband, Clyde E. Moorefield, daughter Patricia Diane Moorefield, son Clyde David Moorefield, PE, granddaughters Sierra Dawn Moorefield and Amy Drellack (husband, Kyle) and great-grandson Austin Kyle Drellack.
The family will receive friends and family at Munden’s Funeral Home in Morehead City, NC on Monday October 8, 2012 from 6 to 8 pm.
